Leading Yourself

Get Over Stuff

“If you never make a mistake, you’ll never be a leader.”

INTRODUCTION

We all know people who want to better themselves in life, but this is easier said than done. Success needs more than good intention, it needs a roadmap. In order to achieve your best possible level of fitness, talent, or hit those top grades, we need to be truly intentional about how we are going to see that improvement in our lives. However, even good intentions coupled with the most detailed plan are still nothing without action. The desire must be a strong enough catalyst within us to cause us to act.

Let’s say we have a desire to travel somewhere. We make our plans and plot out a destination, we even get in the car and start the engine, but minutes later the engine dies. What happened? The car ran out of fuel! Discipline is the fuel that will help us reach our destination. We can’t expect to reach our goals without putting in hard work along the way. You can’t eat the fruit of success without the root of commitment! Everyone wants what discipline brings without doing what discipline requires.

The truth is that discipline takes continual commitment, dedication and effort.

PART 1 - ….

1. Beat The Boring Bits

The truth is that discipline isn't all bright lights and fireworks; it's more light bulbs and party poppers! Many people struggle with living a disciplined life because they can't deal with the monotony of the everyday. In reality life often unfolds with dull days, punctuated by occasional special events. However, to be taken seriously and treated with respect, we must learn to live consistently. To keep growing, we must keep moving and master the monotony. Have you ever wondered how the mighty oak tree became the majestic figure it's often described as? You guessed it. It grew day after day. Progress can seem slow, boring, or even meaningless, but a life of consistency builds a legacy.

2. Fix Your Focus

Discipline requires a goal, a reason for the effort. When you have a goal in mind that has high importance to you, you'll find that discipline comes more easily. Fixing your gaze on future rewards is a great motivation to stay disciplined. When the enemies of discipline appear, a fixed focus will help you stay on track and in the zone. Lack of time, money, seasons of life, changes of priorities, or disappointments can all challenge discipline but I've observed that the most successful leaders seem to be relentless in the area of discipline and self control and they find success through fixing their focus.

QUESTION: WHAT DO YOU NEED TO WORK ON?

Think about the two tips above and rate yourself out of 10 (10 being awesome) on each of the following;

Staying focused in class when the lesson is boring

Finishing the homework assignment without being distracted

REFLECTIONS

Discuss your week with your friend or mentor and seek advice on how you could become more disciplined.

Talking points could include;

  • When is the best time in my week to relax?

  • Are there any days that I feel more pressure than others and why is that?

  • What one thing could I do to ease the pressure on a particular day?

  • What could I do less of that’s unhelpful in my week?

  • What should I be doing more of and when?

  • What is really preventing me from being more organised?

  • What one thing can I do today that will help me be more organised?

  • What is my biggest distraction?

PART 2 - GETTING IN SHAPE

3. Getting In Shape

There are a handful of areas in everyone’s life that require attention and discipline. In my experience, if neglected, these areas will cause everything else to fall apart. I call them vital zones and they are relationships, finance, and health. I recommend everyone make an intentional audit of these vital zones and analyse where a lack of discipline could be causing chaos.

Relationships

We are relational beings, created to be in community. When there is tension, fall out, or dissatisfaction affecting our relationships, it can make for an unpleasant journey ahead.

Studies

When our finances are out of sync and applying pressure to our circumstances, the impact is felt in every other area of our lives. When this vital zone is in chaos we need to stop, review, and commit to discipline in this area.

Health, Diet & Fitness

When our health, whether it be emotional, physical, or mental, is not as it should be, all areas of our lives are impacted. Discipline in this vital zone is essential to ensure we function to the best of our ability and keep moving forward in our leadership.

To finish off this topic, take a few moments to answer the following;

  1. What one thing stood out most to you during this lesson?

  2. Consider one way this has helped you become a better leader?
